Washington, DC - Congressman Lloyd Doggett announced today that the Chestnut Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation (CNRC) is receiving a $2.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for affordable housing for seniors in East Austin.
"This grant helps seniors to maintain their independence in their own neighborhood," said Rep. Doggett, a senior member of the Ways & Means Committee and the Budget Committee. "By providing alternatives to nursing home and institutional care, the grant money offers more choices to our seniors. As we've seen in similar projects, like Lyons Gardens, and at Conley-Guerrero Senior Activity Center, the East Austin senior community thrives on comprehensive services provided in their own neighborhood."
"The Chestnut Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation is very excited about our grant, and that the City of Austin and Austin Housing Finance Corporation are working with us on the land transaction. We very much look forward to working with these public entities, but also other private and non-profit individuals and groups to make this senior housing project a model for senior housing in Austin and the U.S.," said CNRC President Sean Garretson.
The $2.2 million in federal funding will build a 20-unit multi-family affordable housing complex at East Martin Luther King Boulevard and E.M. Franklin Avenue. Though the project is still under development, the proposal includes space for social activities, health screening, and nutrition services. The City of Austin is partnering on this project, providing land and additional funding.
